The next day when Dan woke up, not at his father’s call, but something else.Rubbing his eyes, he hopped off his mattress and went to look for his father.

He stopped in his tracks, shocked.

The room reeked of a deathly smell. He rushed to his father’s side and touched his face.Ice cold.Realizing the truth, Dan, however, did not cry.He knew something was wrong when his father asked him the queer question the night before.

He had been mentally prepared.

“I said I would survive on my own.And earn my own keep.I’ve got to keep my promise.” he thought.”I think, it’s time to let go.”

Packing a small bag, with a small packet of rice, a coat and a five dollar bill, Dan suddenly teared up.Dragging his bag, he ran to his father’s room again, shouting,”Papa!I will keep my promise!I am going out to earn my own keep…” He had no time to finish-the landlord had entered the house.

Leaping out of the window, the agile Dan took a last look at his father. He knew that he would never see him again.

How would Dan keep his promise? Will he survive?Find out when Chapter 3 is posted!

“Son, what’s the meaning of life?”cancer victim, Gil, asked his five year old son.

You might think it’s a silly thing to ask a four year old, but Dan was more than a little kid-he was a bright boy, who could speak like a dictionary when he was four,”Well, I don’t really know, but I do know life is not meaningless.”

Curious, Gil questioned,”What makes you say that?”

“You see, even if I don’t have Mama, I still have you, Papa. And my friends.Even if life is meaningless..”The little boy stopped. He looked up.Then he remembered he was in a house, not an open field, where you could smell the fresh air, watch the pure, fluffy clouds loat by, and run freely.

Gil sighed,”You will get used to this living situation sooner or later.” Tears welled up in Dan’s eyes.”I know. I must learn to stand on my own feet.”

“Son, if I leave you tonight, what would you do?”

“I will earn my own keep and try my best to survive,” he hung his head.” but I will miss you alot,Papa.”

That night, after Dan fell asleep, Gil snapped off the lights, sighed and retreated into his room. He sat on his bed, and fell into a deep sleep.

He never woke up again.

What will Dan do without his father? Will he do as he said, and try to survive on his own? Find out when Chapter Two is posted!
